Today, Monday 19th December 2022, the High Court has ruled that the UK Government’s plan to send some asylum seekers to Rwanda is lawful and does not contravene the refugees’ human rights. The High Court has ruled against refugee rights activists (including Care for Calais, Movement for Justice, Detention Action, IFIR, and the civil servants’ union PCS) who challenged the government’s policy of deporting refugees to Rwanda. The International Federation of Iraqi Refugees (IFIR) strongly condemns the High Court decision to allow the UK Government to send refugees to Rwanda.
“This is a terrible and disgraceful decision that violates the human rights of refugees who have come to this country seeking safety,” said Dashty Jamal, the IFIR secretary. The UK government, he continued, “treats refugees like criminals. Many of them have fled their war-torn countries. They are escaping from circumstances brought on by UK foreign policy. The policy of sending refugees to Rwanda, a nation that does not respect the human rights of its own citizens, is a disgrace to the UK today. Together with organisations for the rights of refugees and people with human rights, IFIR will keep challenging this decision.
