  18 October 2016

President Barzani, Kurdistan Regional Government c/o Mr Karwan Jamal Tahir, High Representative KRG Representation in the UK 23 Buckingham Gate, London SW1E 6LB.

Dear President Barzani,

Re: Wedat Hussein Ali; killing of journalists in Kurdistan

I am writing to express my grave concern over the killing of the above-named journalist in Dohuk on 13 August 2016. According to eye-witnesses, Wedat Hussein Ali was dragged from his car in broad daylight by three armed men and found dead just a few hours later. This killing has drawn international attention, having been highlighted by both Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International.

Please could you ensure that a full and proper investigation is carried out at the earliest opportunity.

I am also writing to ask you to ensure that full and proper investigations are also carried out into the killings of the following three journalists:

  • Kawa Garmeyani – killed on 5 December 2013

  • Sardasht Osman – killed on 3 May 2010

  • Soran Mama Hama – killed on 22 July 2008

It is of great concern that these killings remain unresolved and I would ask you to do everything you can to bring the perpetrators of these crimes to justice.

Thank you for your kind consideration of this matter; I look forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely,

Jean Lambert MEP Green Party Member of the European Parliament for London
